TEXT: JOHN 14:26
26But
the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name,
he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance,
whatsoever I have said unto you.
KEY TEXT: John
16:14 “…He shall teach you…and bring all
things to your remembrance…”
REFLECTION: The world was depending on the
disciples. They were the ones who knew
the Lord personally. They were the ones who
profited from those intimate conversations with the Savior—the kind that truly
reveal a person’s heart. They were the ones who would be asked, “What would
Jesus have said? or What would Jesus do in this situation?” And they were the
ones who could answer, “Jesus said…”
or “Immediately Jesus stretched forth His
hand and…”
They were the ones who
would lay out sheets of papyrus and take reed pens in hand to write the New Testament.
The world needed to know
who Jesus was, what Jesus did, and why Jesus came. The accuracy of their recollection was
essential. The import and impact of Christ’s life must be recorded for the
ages.
And more than a simple
record of our Lord’s sayings and deeds, the passion and compassion of the
Savior must be known.
The task would have been
impossible for the unlearned disciples, except that the Lord kept His
promise. “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, shall teach you…and bring all
things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
The Holy Spirit is not
only a Spirit who convicts and convinces, a Spirit who converts and
consecrates, a Spirit who empowers and purifies, but He is a Spirit who reminds
and oversees the writing of the New Testament.
The
Apostles themselves were keenly aware of the Spirit’s guidance as they
wrote. Peter affirmed, “19We have also a more sure word of prophecy, unto which ye
do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until
the day dawn and the day star arise in your hearts, 20knowing
this first: that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any private
interpretation. 21For the prophecy came not in olden times by
the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy
Ghost.” (I
Peter 1:19-21). Paul declared, “ 16All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly equipped for all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16,17).
Those who deny the accuracy or the authority of the Bible are unwittingly (or wittingly) asserting their doubts in the verity of Christ’s promise “He shall bring all things to your remembrance,” and in the veracity of the Spirit-breathed Word of God.
The same Spirit that
brought the words of Christ to the remembrance of the disciples in the first
century is that same Spirit that will bring to our remembrance the words of the
Savior in the 21st century. He
is faithful to bring “all things to our
remembrance…”
PRAYER: Our Father in Heaven, The more we learn of Thee, the more we
desire to know of Thee. Your truth is
enlightening, your wisdom is empowering, and your example is amazing. We pray that you would remind us each day,
not only that you are The Truth, but of the Truth you taught and exampled. Give us discernment in the living of this
day. All this we pray in the name of
Jesus, Amen. “Our Father, &c"
